December in Guangzhou, where dusk arrives a little earlier. On the evening of December 19th, the tree-lined paths of Guangzhou College of Commerce took on a particularly gentle quality in the evening light. The international teachers arrived in small groups, exchanging knowing smiles and casual greetings of "Oh, you're here too." The air filled with an easy warmth. Staff members who had been waiting by the shuttle bus offered friendly hellos while helping everyone aboard. As the doors closed softly, the car became something like a moving living room, where they shared amusing classroom moments from the week and little discoveries about life here. Outside the windows, the city's lights blended with the dusk, while inside, their voices and laughter quietly melted away the winter chill and any sense of distance.

By the time we reached the restaurant, warmlight was already spilling through the plate-glass windows. The moment we stepped inside, the aroma of food wrapped itself around us—flavors from every corner of the world, with several signature dishes commanding attention. Each plate was a perfect marriage of color, fragrance and taste, together forming a buffet that felt like nothing less than a heartfelt welcome.

Once the teachers had settled in, Vice President Zhou Peng, Associate Dean Yang Yueqing from the International College, and Deputy Director Huang Mingzhu from International Office made their way over with smiles, moving naturally among them like old friends, stopping at different tables. They chatted warmly with the teachers about how the semester had been going, asking whether there was anything they needed to support with in their teaching, and checking in carefully about how they were adapting to life here and whether they had encountered any difficulties. These calm, sincere conversations made the feeling of "being seen and cared for" remarkably tangible.

Moritapulled out his phone to share a video of his daughter playing violin with those sitting nearby. This dinner, named "Gathering at GCC, Cherishing in Warmth," was far more than an meal. Here, a slice of durian cake, a taste of something familiar from home, a word of care that landed where it mattered, or a proud story shared about students—all of these became warm coordinates connecting them to one another.It allowed each teacher far from their own country to feel that belonging meant being looked after in the details and genuinely understood through sharing.
